After the two brief chapters on biography, Carson then goes back to treat the works (most of them, anyway) individually. The volume is readable - perhaps a nice introduction for a new generation of students and theatregoers or pleasant summer reading for professors to take to the beach. The intnxluction's treatment of Miller's marriage to Miss Monroe, for example, has to be brief, but like Joe DiMaggio, it has touched all the bases. The first two chapters cover sixty-seven years of Miller's life and work in thirty-two pages, and it is clear that Carson does not mean to plumb any new depths as he sails along.
